Infinity Ward, the Call of Duty development studio behind the Modern Warfare games, has confirmed that a new title will likely arrive in 2022.
Call of Duty has been an annual series since 2003. Alternating between two or three different lead development studios, we’ve seen the series evolve incrementally over the last two decades. Most people would likely expect to see a new Call of Duty game in 2022. However, recent events have given players cause for concern.
For one, Call of Duty: Vanguard is not selling well at all. Sales are down massively in comparison to Black Ops Cold War, indicating that players might finally be experiencing fatigue or burnout. In addition, publisher Activision Blizzard is in hot water over lawsuits regarding its toxic working culture. To top all of that, the publisher was recently bought out by Microsoft, casting doubt over the annual release schedule.
However, Infinity Ward has put all of our doubts to rest, promising that “a new generation of Call of Duty is coming soon. Stay frosty.” The tweet from the official Infinity Ward account all but confirms that it’s working on a new entry in the Call of Duty series, and that it will probably release this year.
What will Call of Duty 2022 look like?
As for what form the new game will take, we’ve already got some good ideas. The ‘Stay frosty’ line points towards a new entry in the Modern Warfare reboot series, given that it’s a line from Captain Price. 2019’s Modern Warfare left the door open for a sequel, so it’s likely that we’ll see something along the lines of ‘Modern Warfare II’.
